Financial assistance and support available to people impacted by TC Nora

Financial assistance and support services are now available to residents in Pormpuraaw, Mapoon and Kowanyama who have been directly affected by Tropical Cyclone Nora.

Acting Communities Minister Leeanne Enoch said the cyclone had caused damage with strong winds and torrential rain over the weekend, particularly across the three western Cape York communities.

“Through jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), we will be providing Emergency Hardship Assistance grants to help cover the costs of essential items, such as food and clothing, for people directly impacted by this disaster,” she said.

“Financial assistance of up to $180 per person, to a maximum of $900 for a family of five or more, is now available to people experiencing genuine financial hardship as a result of TC Nora.

“Residents may also be eligible to receive a one-off voucher of up to $1765 forsingle adults, and up to $5300 for couples/families, that can be used at the Local Retail stores as a contribution to the repair or replacement of damaged essential household items such as a fridge or washing machine.”

Ms Enoch said Ready Reserve staff had been deployed to Cairns to lead community recovery efforts, with more expected to be deployed over the coming days.

“As soon as the affected areas are safe and accessible, we will be sending our hard-working community recovery workers out to provide targeted outreach to local residents,” she said.

“These staff will be able to assist community members to meet their immediate personal needs, including emotional support.”
