Queensland businesses are making waves in reducing their energy, water and waste bills and have today received a special Star status for reducing their impact on the environment.
Minister for Environment Leeanne Enoch said 32 businesses had achieved Star Partnership status through the ecoBiz program in the latest round, adding to the 100 other businesses that have already saved more almost 7.3 million tonnes of CO₂ – the equivalent of taking more than 1.5 million cars off the road every year.
The ecoBiz program is delivered by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) on behalf of the Queensland Government.
“The businesses receiving this special status today have achieved at least a 10 per cent reduction in energy, water or waste following their 12-month involvement with the program,” Ms Enoch said.
“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to supporting Queensland businesses to be more sustainable.
“Our partnership with CCIQ is driving greater sustainability outcomes and this program aligns with our commitment to address climate change, energy costs and reduce waste.
“Over the past five years, more than 1,000 businesses have been part of the ecoBiz program, and now more than 100 have secured Star Partnership status.
“With these businesses saving more than 7.3 million tonnes of CO₂, this shows that programs like this are making a huge difference and I congratulate businesses who are environmental champions and who are doing their part to implement change and be more sustainable.”
Ms Enoch said the Palaszczuk Government was committed to establishing a credible pathway for up to 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030 and achieving zero net emissions by 2050.
“We have also set an interim emissions reduction target of at least 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030,” Ms Enoch said.
“We recognise that small and medium businesses want to reduce water and power use to save money and become more efficient, more competitive and more sustainable.
“And the Palaszczuk Government is committed to supporting businesses to better understand energy, water and waste costs and how to save money through sustainability initiatives, which is why we are funding a revamped ecoBiz program.
“The ecoBiz program, which is completely free, is giving businesses the tools and guidance required to take actions that save them money and help save the environment.”
