The Honourable Di Farmer

People experiencing domestic and family violence in Mossman/Port Douglas, Cairns and Mareeba can look forward to more support with more than $5m over five years for new services.

Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Di Farmer said the funding for the new services was part of the Queensland Government’s commitment towards addressing domestic violence in our state.

“We’re looking for organisations to deliver specialist domestic violence services across Far North Queensland,” she said.

“Support services like these are vital to make sure vulnerable Queenslanders who have experienced domestic and family violence have the help they need to get their lives back on track.”

Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said domestic and family violence continued to be a serious community issue.

“That’s why we are investing in more local services like this across the state to bridge local service gaps,” Mr Pitt said.

“Making support available to victims and their families especially in regional areas will make a huge difference to when they reach out for support.”

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said: “The services will also mean that domestic violence victims will not have to travel long distances to access vital support when they need it most.”

Member for Cairns Michael Healy said: “The funding to be directed to Cairns will further support the newly established domestic and family violence High Risk Team and operate as part of a combined response to combat domestic and family violence in the region”.

The services will be funded for up to five years with the three new services at Mossman/Port Douglas, Cairns and Mareeba sharing up to $980,000 annually.

Ms Farmer said eliminating domestic violence in all its forms was a top priority for the Queensland Government as outlined in the Not Now, Not Ever report.
