Kingaroy courthouse refurbishment complete

The Kingaroy community has welcomed the completed refurbishment of the town’s courthouse with an official opening today by Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath.

Mrs D’Ath said the $5.3 million renovation was long overdue and hoped it would bring greater access to justice for the community.

“The original courthouse was built in 1966 and served Kingaroy well,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“But it was obvious to everyone that it needed an upgrade, and it is with great pleasure that I am able to officially open the refurbished courthouse today.”

Mrs D’Ath praised everyone involved in the refurbishment especially Toowoomba construction and civil engineering firm, FKG Group, who led the project.

“I would also like to make mention of the great work that local firms, Wards Electrical and Kingaroy Refrigeration, did as major subcontractors during the build,” she said.

“It is always great to see local projects like these undertaken by local people.”

The refurbished courthouse has been operating since November last year and the feedback from the community had been positive.

The refurbishment took just under a year to complete and included:

• demolition of the existing courthouse to the building shell on the upper floor and partial demolition of the lower floor;
• a full internal refurbishment including acoustic treatments;
• a full external refurbishment (including a new roof and external walls, external windows and doors, external stairs, ramp and signage);
• an integrated secure link to the watchhouse; and
• two new holding and interview cells.

In this financial year, we are investing $90.7 million in capital projects across Queensland in the justice space.

“This also includes upgrades to other courthouses including Rockhampton, Beenleigh and Townsville,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“Our courts do vital work in delivering the day-to-day administration of justice and we are committed to ensuring they have adequate resources.”
