$2.4 million revamp helps Mount Morgan CBD shine again

The historic gold mining centre of Mount Morgan is ready to put its tourism credentials on full display, thanks to an almost $2.4 million revitalisation of the CBD that’s breathing new life into the iconic town.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe and Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Margaret Strelow today officially opened the new and improved streetscape, which received $1.4 million in funding from the Palaszczuk Government.

“Our investment of more than $1.4 million in the CBD revitalisation project supported up to 40 jobs during construction and helped cement Mount Morgan as a must-see destination for visitors to Central Queensland,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“This is the start of a bigger and better future for this town and the Palaszczuk Government is proud to have played a role through the Works for Queensland and the Local Government Grants and Subsidies programs.

“Our $400 million Works for Queensland program is a proven jobs-generator in Central Queensland, supporting 925 local jobs to November 2017, as reported by local councils. It’s great news for jobs and it’s stimulating the local economy.”

    Councillor Strelow said:

“The streetscape features impressive arbours replicating the ‘Tree of Knowledge’, refurbished cultural icons, relocation of the overhead powerlines and fully rebuilt amenities which will be fantastic assets for the community and make an incredible first impression when visitors come to the town.

“These projects are vital to the well-being of our community as new infrastructure increases the regional liveability of the town and provides a clear economic benefit for a small community.

"This upgrade of the Morgan Street median strip and streetscape has provided locals with a functional community space.

“The Mount Morgan CBD project is a good example of three levels of government working together for the benefit of the local community.”

The Mount Morgan CBD revitalisation also received funding from the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program, along with funding from Flynn MP Ken O’Dowd and Rockhampton Regional Council.
