Disability conference aims to inspire sector

People from across the disability sector have converged on the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre for a two-day conference to engage with industry leaders and learn new techniques.

Disability Services Minister Coralee O’Rourke officially opened the 2018 Disability Support Workers Conference today (February 20) and said she was excited to see experts in the field coming together to share their knowledge in order to better support clients in Queensland.

“Every day thousands of disability workers across the state dedicate their time to making a positive difference in the lives of vulnerable Queenslanders,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“That’s why it’s so important to support workers in the field to ensure they have the resources and skills needed to get positive outcomes for their clients.

“The Palaszczuk Government wants everyone with disability right across Queensland to lead fulfilling lives and to reach their goals, each and every day.

“But we can only achieve this by working together to share our knowledge and best practices, ensuring we meet the challenges Queenslanders with disability face.

“This two-day conference is a wonderful opportunity for people from right across the disability sector to come together.”

Minister O’Rourke said it was an exciting time to be working in the disability sector, with changes across the nation under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

“Across Queensland and indeed right across Australia we are seeing significant advances in the way we approach things,” she said.

“The NDIS is rolling out across the state at the moment, and for people with disability that means more choice and control over how they receive supports.

“This conference is a great way to find out the latest developments and ensure your organisation is as up-to-date as possible and helping Queenslanders with disability kick goals.

“This conference is designed to engage with disability support workers and give them the opportunity to engage with industry leaders and peers so they can learn the latest techniques and hear first-hand experiences from people with disability in the NDIS environment.”

Minister O’Rourke said the conference was run by CPL and Multicap with support from the Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors.
