Queensland calls out Federal LNP for climate inaction

Queensland Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef Leeanne Enoch has joined with other state and territory Ministers to condemn the Federal Government for its inaction to address climate change.

At the Meeting of Environment Ministers in Canberra today, Minister Enoch said the lack of action was unacceptable.

“It is time for the Federal Government to stop “noting” the science around the impacts of climate change, and actually step up and take action,” she said.

“It is unacceptable that there has been no progress on climate change by the Federal Government. We need federal leadership on climate change action and today I joined with other states and demanded that from the Commonwealth.

“Today I asked the Federal Government to return to the next Meeting of Environment Ministers with an action plan of what they will do to respond to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report’s findings about the dangers of 1.5 degree global warming. Unfortunately, the Federal Environment Minister would not agree to undertake that important work.

“The Palaszczuk Government is taking strong action with our targets: 50% renewable energy by 2030, 30% emissions reduction by 2030 and zero net emissions by 2050.

“The Federal Environment Minister needs to show some leadership. Either she’s committed to climate action or she’s not.”

Ms Enoch said Queensland also continued to proudly lead work on product stewardship for plastic bags and batteries.

“There is a groundswell of community support for companies to take responsibility for the products they make and the bags they use.

“We will continue to tirelessly pursue this agenda.”
