Aquaman star Jason Momoa has returned to the Gold Coast, joining local cast and crew for the Australian premiere of the latest Warner Bros blockbuster.

Walking the ‘blue carpet’ at Robina’s Event Cinemas this evening, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said bringing Aquaman to Queensland had been a fruitful journey for the State.

“It’s no secret Queenslanders have a great love of the water and while we’ve produced plenty of Olympic swimmers and world champion surfers, we’ve never had a deep-sea superhero to call our own until now,” the Premier said.

“Back in 2016, my Government fought to secure the first stand-alone Aquaman film for Queensland and through our $50 million Production Attraction Strategy, we successfully lured this DC Comics epic to our State.

“And the rewards speak for themselves – 1,000 jobs for Queensland cast and crews, another 700 roles for extras and more than $144 million injected into the local economy.

“It’s been a pleasure to welcome Jason back to our State to celebrate the release of what is destined to be the biggest movie of the summer.”

Premier Palaszczuk said Aquaman had helped Queensland perpetuate its reputation as the home of the blockbuster.

“Queensland has the breathtaking locations and adaptable infrastructure to host any Norse God or Sea King,” the Premier said.

“In recent years the Village Roadshow studios have been transformed into Atlantis, Asgard, Skull Island…and even a table tennis venue for this year’s Commonwealth Games!

“And we’re continuing to grow our screen opportunities, building a $12 million screen production complex at Hemmant and introducing a 10 per cent rebate to attract more high-end post production work.”

Aquaman will be released in Australian cinemas on 26 December.
