Another successful Sport for Bush Kids (SFBK) event has concluded in Mount Isa, boosted by $10,000 in support from the Palaszczuk Government.

Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said the state was proud to get behind the fantastic initiative – held by the Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association and now in its 20th year – after drought conditions had placed undue pressure on regular local sponsors.

“Ensuring every Queensland child has access to sport and recreation, no matter where they live, will ensure a healthier Queensland,” Mr de Brenni said.

“SFBK is vital for getting our kids active, experiencing new activities, and helping them make friends in the process.”

Twelve sports were offered at SFBK 2018, in addition to water awareness classes, with coaching and mentoring provided by trained professionals.

“Many families who live in remote regions of Queensland are disadvantaged by distance from participating in team sports and receiving expert coaching,” Mr de Brenni said.

“That’s why the Palaszczuk Government’s 10-year Sport and Active Recreation Strategy – due for release next year – will aim to boost sports and recreation participation among all Queenslanders, regardless of location, age, gender, ability or financial situation.”

SFBK Fundraising Officer Natalie Pears thanked the Palaszczuk Government for the funding support and said the smiles on the children’s faces spoke volumes about the event.

“Swimming is an especially critical activity because most of the kids don’t have access to a pool or river, so to get them into Mount Isa for water safety classes was really important,” Ms Pears said.

“For many of the primary school children, it was their first introduction to team sport as well, and it was fantastic to see them improve throughout the event.

“They may have been learning how to kick a football or play netball, but they were also socialising with children their own age.

“And with around 100 families travelling to Mount Isa for the event, it was also about that wider social aspect too, which is great for the community as a whole.”
