Praise on the menu for tireless volunteers

Education Minister Grace Grace today thanked the countless number of tuckshop workers and volunteers who’ve dedicated their time to Queensland state schools.

“Whether you are eight or 80, school tuckshops and the meals they provide sure spark a fond memory and a smile,” Ms Grace said.

“Today, on Tuckshop Day, we thank the tireless workers and volunteers who are the bread and butter of this operation which plays a key part in the school day.”

Ms Grace said Tuckshop Day was held annually on the first Friday in November to highlight the important role tuckshops play in school life and the wider community.

“Access to nutritious food and drink has never been more important and an effective tuckshop system allows busy families to have one less task to worry about at the start of their day,” Ms Grace said.

“Healthy food options also help students to concentrate and increases productive learning.”

“School communities and tuckshop workers used the ideas inspired by the Queensland Government’s – Healthy Food and Drink Supply Strategy – Smart Choices to promote healthy eating as a way of maintaining good health.

“I’m always so impressed to hear of the wonderful work and innovation that is being done across our school tuckshops,” Ms Grace said.

“We certainly have come a long way from the hot chips and cream buns of my day.”

Ms Grace said tuckshop staff also contributed to a school’s community spirit and wished to congratulate all schools nominated for the Queensland Tuckshop of the Year Awards, held tonight.

“Parents or members of the wider community can make a real contribution by volunteering and joining the team.”

“I encourage people of all walks of life to consider volunteering for this important service. Even an hour here or there can make a huge difference to your local school” Ms Grace said.

“All you need is an appetite for community service.”
