Queenslanders urged to promise to pause on Remembrance Day

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is calling on all Queenslanders to make a promise to pause for one minute at 11am today on 11 November to commemorate the Armistice Centenary.

This historic Remembrance Day marks the 100-year anniversary of the signing of the agreement that ended the First World War, during which 57,705 Queenslanders enlisted to fight, with many never returning home.

“Remembrance Day this year is particularly poignant because we observe the signing of the Armistice, and this significant historic event is an opportunity for Queenslanders to honour the service and sacrifice made by all servicemen and women for the freedom and lifestyle we are afforded today,” the Premier said.

“I urge everyone throughout Queensland to make a promise to pause for one minute at 11am this Sunday 11 November to pay their respects to those who sacrificed their todays for our tomorrows.”

The annual Remembrance Day services and ceremonies organised by Returned and Services League of Australia (Queensland) sub branches will be the cornerstone of Armistice Centenary commemorations across Queensland. 

These traditional events will be complemented by the Queensland Government’s Armistice Centenary tributes, including a public art installation that is three metres tall, 16 metres in length and spells out the word ‘REMEMBER’.

Each of the giant acrylic letters is comprised of thousands of poppies—handmade by members of the public across the State—and the artwork pays tribute to the Queenslanders who enlisted during the First World War. The installation is currently on tour, taking in Townsville, Mackay, Longreach, Bundaberg and Brisbane.

Other Queensland Government commemorations include illumination and digital projections, choral concerts and community activities. 

“Sunday 11 November 2018 is a very important date for Queensland, for Australia and around the world, and I hope Queenslanders will make a promise to pause for one minute at 11am today to reflect on the sacrifices made by the many so we may live our lives as we choose.”
