World first ratings system for motorcycle clothing launched

Motorcycle riders will now be able to make better decisions about bike clothing thanks to a new clothing star rating classification.

The Motorcycle Clothing Assessment Program (MotoCAP) is a world-first system designed to improve rider safety by using two five-star ratings – one for protection and one for comfort.

The MotoCAP partnership, involving stakeholders from the Australian Government, New Zealand, and Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, all worked together to develop the system.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said MotoCAP’s launch would change the way motorbike riders thought about clothing and protection.

“Last year in Queensland, 930 riders were hospitalised because of a crash, many of who suffered abrasion injuries,” Mr Bailey said.

“The development of MotoCAP means riders now have more information about their choice of protective gear and could have a significant impact on the safety and wellbeing of Queensland motorcyclists.

“MotoCAP will make it easier for riders to strike the balance between personal protection and comfort for riding in Australian conditions.”

Mr Bailey said the new clothing system would help lessen the seriousness of injuries to motorcycle riders.

“Regardless of who or what causes a crash, vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists will always be worse off in terms of injury or death,” Mr Bailey said.

“This is why Transport and Main Roads (TMR) joined together with the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) and the Australian Motorcycle Council, as well as other road agencies and stakeholders around Australia and New Zealand, to develop the system and test the gear.”

The MotoCAP initiative represents another key action in the Safer Roads, Safer Queensland: Road Safety Action Plan 2017-19 in support of the Queensland Government’s efforts to reduce road trauma.
