Queensland and Berlin sign health accord

Queensland’s relationship with Germany has been further strengthened by a new partnership to advance the fields of health and medical science.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk signed a joint declaration of intent with the President of the German Bundesrat and Governing Mayor of Berlin Michael Müller in Brisbane today.

The agreement will lead to the exchange of expertise, information and experience and will ensure Berlin and Queensland are at the forefront of healthcare innovation and the biomedical industries into the future.

A group of Queensland and Berlin experts in science, higher education, research, industry and healthcare will develop a process to inform the future of health care, medical science and innovation, and medical education and training.

“Germany and Queensland enjoy a valuable and productive relationship in many fields, especially in advanced manufacturing, renewable energy and medicine, so I’m delighted we are extending and strengthening our common bonds to advance the fields of health and medical science,” the Premier said.

“This accord will encourage and strengthen the spirit of cooperation between our healthcare systems, research teams, institutions, foundations and organisations.

“We’re already pushing the boundaries in medical research, life sciences, health care and innovation which are at the heart of my government’s $650 million Advance Queensland suite of programs.

“This agreement with Berlin will build on this and by boosting health research and sharing our healthcare experience, this partnership will contribute to better health outcomes.”

The Premier said Queensland has some of the world’s best-known research institutions such as QIMR Berghofer, Queensland University of Technology, The University of Queensland, Griffith University and James Cook University.

“Our Queensland Health system is also home to a wealth of healthcare expertise and innovation and, by boosting health research and sharing our healthcare experience, this partnership will contribute to better health outcomes for Queenslanders,” the Premier said.

"German investment is playing a crucial role in both traditional and new industries in Queensland.

“Together, we’re preparing Queensland to become the knowledge-based economy of tomorrow, and we’re proud we can do so alongside Berlin.”

The agreement between Queensland and Berlin takes effect immediately.
