Fallen Queensland firefighters honoured on Firefighters Remembrance Day

Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford – and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Commissioner Katarina Carroll – will this morning (Wednesday) pause to remember the state’s firefighters killed in the line of duty.

Ahead of a Firefighters Remembrance Day ceremony in Brisbane, Mr Crawford said the tenth day of the tenth month was “an important day of reflection for firefighters across the State”.

“These services are an opportunity for us to honour the memories and acknowledge the sacrifices firefighters have made to keep Queensland communities safe,” Mr Crawford said.

Mr Crawford said 52 Queensland firefighters who had lost their lives on duty since 1877 would be remembered at ceremonies state-wide.

“Firefighters are faced with demanding and challenging situations every day and often sacrifice their own safety to protect the lives and properties of local communities,” Mr Crawford said.  

“Today, we take the time to remember their contributions and remember the families and friends of the fallen as we gather in all parts of the state.”

QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll said fire stations across Queensland would fly flags at half-mast to honour fallen colleagues and show appreciation for the risks taken by firefighters.

“We will also take a few moments at 10am to stop and reflect on the day’s significance to firefighters both past and present,” Ms Carroll said.

“Firefighters play a crucial role in responding to emergencies and disasters to protect people, property and the environment and are united by their desire to serve our communities.

“They continuously put themselves in uncertain situations, and today we stand together to remember the contributions of our fallen colleagues.”

QFES will host several commemorative services, with community members wanting to attend asked to arrive by 9.45am for a 10am start.

Brisbane Region: St Brigid’s Church, 78 Musgrave Road, Red Hill;

Central Region: North Rockhampton Fire and Rescue Station, 753 Yammba Rd, North Rockhampton;

Far Northern Region: St Joseph’s Parish School, Corner Jack and Alice Streets, Atherton;

Northern Region: South Townsville Fire Station, 2-8 Morey Street, South Townsville;

North Coast Region: St Paul’s Anglican Church, Corner Lennox and Ellena Street, Maryborough;

South Eastern Region: Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, 31 Edmund Rice Drive, Ashmore;

South Western Region: Toowoomba Empire Theatre Church, 54-56 Neil Street, Toowoomba.
