Minister for Police and Minister for Corrective Services
The Honourable Mark Ryan

Police Minister Mark Ryan and Police Commissioner Ian Stewart have met with Townsville’s community champion, Major General Stuart Lyle Smith AO.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced Major General Smith’s appointment during her visit to Townsville last week.

As part of his role, he will directly report to the Premier on community concerns and how they can be addressed.

Mr Ryan said Major General Smith’s learnings throughout his 36 year military career, including his command and leadership experience, would be valuable tools as he liaises with Townsville’s hardworking police and other stakeholders.

“I cannot praise our men and women in blue in Townsville highly enough,” Mr Ryan said.

“Townsville police continue to do a great job in addressing crime on several fronts, whether it is through the Labor-funded Project Booyah or proactive operations.

“Under the Palaszczuk Government, there are more police than ever before in Townsville. Our Government will also deliver a further 53 police personnel in Townsville over four years.

“But policing is only one element when it comes to tackling community issues in Townsville, which is why the role of community champion is so important.”

Commissioner Stewart said he looked forward to working closely with Major General Smith.

“Townsville police continue to do a fantastic job,” Commissioner Stewart said.
