Last stage of Veloway Cycleway gears up

A $45 million project to make cycling to the CBD from Brisbane’s southside safer and faster is a step closer, with companies invited to tender for Stage E of the Veloway 1 (V1).

This last stage will provide an elevated bicycle freeway from Birdwood Road, Holland Park, to Gaza Road, Tarragindi and will complete the massive, dedicated 17km long cycleway between Eight Mile Plains and the CBD.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the V1 had already transformed Brisbane’s south.

“As a lifelong cyclist myself, this cycling freeway is a massive transformation for safe cycling separated from traffic on the southside with cycleway bridges soaring over Marshall Road, Sterculia Avenue and the Gaza Road off-ramp.” 

“The project is also creating jobs with more than 60 are expected to be supported by this final stage.”

Member for Greenslopes Joe Kelly said cyclists were already using the V1 in droves.

“About 1600 cyclists use the V1 daily compared to 1000 in 2011. The recent completion of Stage D at Greenslopes and commencement of the next stage will increase these numbers,” Mr Kelly said.

“We want to encourage more people to improve their health by getting outdoors on safe, separated, and connected routes.

“More cyclists on the Veloway means faster commute times and less traffic on our local roads.”

Member for Mansfield Corrine McMillan said that last year, eight cyclists died on Queensland roads and that was completely unacceptable.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to building separated cycling infrastructure where possible to help ensure the safety and wellbeing of some of our most vulnerable road users,” she said.

Mr Bailey said the successful tenderer would be announced by mid-2018 with construction planned to start soon after.

Construction is expected to be completed in late 2019.
