Far North Queensland’s fire and emergency service personnel have been recognised during Australia Day 2018 celebrations for their unwavering dedication and service to their local communities.

Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Craig Crawford today (Wednesday) praised the five recipients who received their Australia Day Achievement Medallions in Cairns.

Mr Crawford said they were committed members of their community, and a credit to Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES).

“On behalf of all Queenslanders I want to thank each award recipient for their selflessness, professionalism and dedication,” Mr Crawford said.

“The Australia Day Achievement Medallions are presented to those who have performed excellent work above and beyond their normal course of duty.

“Those recognised today fit that bill and have provided significant contribution to the delivery of fire and emergency services in Queensland.”

Gordonvale Fire and Rescue firefighter Shane Bickhoff was recognised for his pivotal role supporting the development of major events and operational plans across Far North Queensland.

Emergency Management Coordinator Nadine Oosen was cited for her work in pursuing greater regional collaboration on disaster management across the far north to aid preparation, response and recovery efforts during disasters.

Three State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers were also recognised, including Atherton local David McConnell for his dedication to and delivery of core frontline training to emergency service personnel in the far north.

Cairns SES Group leaders Konrad Lehmann von Wehye and Neil Percival shared honours for their focus on continually improving SES operations and supporting the development of their team members.

Herberton local Gary Leech was awarded the Australia Day Appreciation Certificate for supporting QFES personnel when bushfires struck in the Walsh River area, west of Herberton in 2017. The Certificate is presented to individuals or organisations who have provided outstanding support to QFES.

Member for Cairns Michael Healy, who presented the awards on behalf of Mr Crawford, said Mr Leech played an important role as a communications hub between residents, firefighters and authorities during the bushfires.

“Gary’s effort was a great example of a local member stepping up and helping fire and emergency services at a crucial time,” Mr Healy said. “We rely a lot on our fire and emergency service personnel, but quite often they need the community’s support to carry out their task.

“Every person recognised today should be proud of their efforts. They often work under extremely challenging conditions and never do so for reward or tributes."

QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the recipients were diligent individuals who have made outstanding contributions to their communities and the organisation.

“While their backgrounds and experiences may vary, they all share one common goal: devoting their time and expertise to community safety and serving Queenslanders in times of need,” Ms Carroll said.

“It is important to acknowledge the achievements of our workforce and we are proud of their ongoing efforts to protect Queensland communities.”
