The Honourable Craig Crawford

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) personnel will be recognised across the state as part of 2018 Australia Day celebrations.

Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Craig Crawford said award ceremonies will be held today (Wednesday) in Brisbane, Gympie, Cairns and Toowoomba, and in Beenleigh, Rockhampton and Townsville tomorrow to acknowledge those who go above and beyond to serve Queenslanders.

Speaking at an awards ceremony at Kedron’s Emergency Services Complex, Mr Crawford said more than 60 QFES personnel will receive Australia Day Achievement Medallions for their commitment and dedication to the organisation and the broader community.

“These medallions are awarded to those who go that little bit further in their role to the benefit of their fellow Australians,” Mr Crawford said.

“These people are leaders in their respective fields, leaders in the community and both leaders and mentors to their colleagues.

“Their dedication and skills see them respond to all types of situations and emergencies across the state, including floods, fires, road crashes and rescue operations.

“They do all this while also ensuring the community is well prepared and informed in times of crisis. On behalf of all Queenslanders I want to thank each-and-every person receiving a medallion for their selflessness, professionalism and dedication.”

QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the recipients spanned the breadth of the organisation, from Fire and Rescue firefighters to Rural Fire Service (RFS) members and State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers.

“The people being recognised are from all corners of the state and many are volunteers, giving their time, energy and skills to benefit Queensland,” Ms Carroll said.

“Many are pioneers in their respective fields, and their contributions have all made a significant difference to QFS and the communities they serve.

“While their backgrounds and experiences may vary, they all share one common goal: devoting their time and expertise to helping others in times of need.”

Ms Carroll said the medallion ceremonies will occur alongside the presentation of Australia Day Appreciation Certificates to recognise businesses and individuals external to QFES who have helped the organisation in the past 12 months.

“It’s not only our personnel who are acknowledged but also local businesses who have provided much needed assistance and relief to their community,” Ms Carroll said.

“I am extremely proud of everyone who will receive an award during Australia Day 2018 celebrations.”
