The Palaszczuk Government is calling on Far North Queensland construction companies to tender for construction of nurses’ quarters and the relocation of demountable buildings in Kowanyama under the Queensland Government’s new procurement strategy.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the Palaszczuk Government’s Buy Queensland policy, which came into effect on 1 September 2017, was fantastic news for local businesses looking to tender for the works.

“Nurses play a critical role in providing health care and social services in any community, but especially so in regional and remote communities,” Ms Lui said.

“That’s why the Palaszczuk Government is building six one-bedroom apartments which will become nurses quarters.

“The project will also involve relocation of a demountable building in the Kowanyama Primary Health Care Centre site.

“Under our Buy Queensland policy, Far North Queensland businesses will receive preference for this work, so I encourage local businesses to put their hand up and get a tender in.

“I’m pleased that local Kowanyama residents will be encouraged to apply for positions with the successful tenderer.

“The project will provide jobs and income for a range of trades including plumbing, electrical, building, landscaping and carpentry.”

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said the Buy Queensland policy strengthens the chances of local businesses winning jobs in their own community.

“The State Government spends more than $14 billion a year on essential goods and services for Queenslanders, and another $4 billion building and maintaining the state’s infrastructure – roads, schools and hospitals,” Mr de Brenni said.

“When the Queensland Government spends taxpayers’ money on a government contract, we want that money to stay in the local community, helping local businesses to grow and supporting employment for local workers and apprentices.

“Companies who tender for this project will need to demonstrate how they will use local suppliers and contractors.”

The tender closes 6 February 2018. For further information on how to become registered for Queensland Government building and construction work, phone 3008 3392 or visit www.qld.gov.au/gov/building-services
