Queensland is offering up more land for gas to supply the Australian market, hot on the heels of the successful pilot project.

Tenders open today (Eds: Wednesday 6 September) for almost 400 square kilometres of highly prospective land in the Surat and Bowen Basin.

It comes just a day after Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham announced that Queensland company Senex had won the pilot tender to explore a block in the Surat.

“The key to meeting east coast gas supply needs is more gas, not taking gas from one party to give to another,” Dr Lynham said.

“The Palaszczuk Government is working towards more gas, because gas supply is growing as a critical factor when businesses make decisions about creating jobs.

“This is a second opportunity to be a part of our drive to diversify the supply of domestic gas to the Australian market.”

The two new areas total cover 395km2 and lie just north of the townships of Miles and Surat in south-west Queensland.

Tenders opened at 10am today and close on 8 December.

Dr Lynham said they were in prospective areas where infrastructure was relatively close by.

“I am encouraging new local entrants to make their bids to develop these new areas,” he said.

“I expect to be able to announce the preferred tenderers in the first quarter of next year. “
