The Honourable Dr Anthony Lynham

State Development Minister and Member for Stafford, Dr Anthony Lynham was on hand today for the Battle for Australia Memorial rededication at the Chermside Historical Precinct.

Governor of Queensland, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC led the service, which also marked the 75th anniversary of the Battle for Australia.

“Today is about honouring those who served on land and sea and in the air in the South and South West Pacific campaigns of 1942-1945 resisting the direct threat to Australia,” said Dr Lynham.

“The Battle for Australia Memorial, originally unveiled in 2001, was previously located in Queen’s Place, near State Parliament.

“It has been relocated to the Chermside Historical Precinct to make way for the $3 billion Queen’s Wharf Brisbane development.”

The Queen’s Wharf Brisbane project is forecast to generate more than 2000 construction jobs over the next five years and 8000 operational jobs when it opens in 2022, and attract an additional 1.4 million visitors to Queensland each year.

Other memorials have been relocated from the site, including the John Dowie-statue of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II which is now located in the grounds of Government House. John Elliott’s bust of the late Senator Neville Bonner is now located in Parliament House and later in the year the Dutch Memorial will be rededicated at the Roma Street Parklands. Details on the relocation of the Queensland Police Memorial are expected to be announced soon.
