Premier commits $250,000 for Quarry Gardens feasibility study

The Palaszczuk Government will commit $250,000 for a feasibility study into the proposed Quarry Gardens in Toowoomba, which would further boost the City’s reputation as Australia’s Garden City.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said reviving the proposal for the Quarry Gardens, at the Bridge Street quarry site, was raised with her over the weekend when she opened the 68th Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.  State Cabinet met in Toowoomba on Monday

“The Quarry Gardens were first proposed about 15 years ago, but were not progressed due to the severe drought and water restrictions placed on the City,” the Premier said.

“The former Labor State Government built a pipeline connecting Wivenhoe Dam to Cressbrook Dam to provide long-term water security for the Toowoomba region."

“In discussions with the Mayor and the community, I believe it’s time to revisit the proposal.  The potential benefits for the Toowoomba region and our State are very exciting.”

The Premier said the proposal was modelled on the Butchart Gardens, Vancouver Island in Canada, built on a former limestone quarry.

The Butchart Gardens attract an estimated one million visitors each year and support more than 500 jobs in peak season.

“The Carnival of Flowers have once again confirmed Toowoomba’s reputation as Australia’s Garden City.  By thoroughly examining the Quarry Gardens proposal, there is potential to strengthen that reputation and draw even more visitors – from across Australia and overseas – to the great City of Toowoomba,” she said.

“More visitors will create more jobs and opportunities across the Toowoomba region.”

“I know there is strong community and private sector interest in the Quarry Gardens.  Let’s have a thorough examination of the proposal.”

The Premier said her Government would work with Toowoomba Regional Council on the feasibility study of the proposal.
