Driving the Gateway Motorway through Nudgee and Bracken Ridge has become safer and less congested thanks to the opening of the new Nudgee Road Bridge.

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher welcomed the opening of the bridge to road, cyclist and pedestrian traffic as the first major structure to be finished on the $1.142 billion Gateway Upgrade North project.

“Completion of the bridge at Nudgee Road is a significant step towards delivering the Gateway Upgrade North project - reducing congestion and improving safety for the people of Brisbane,” Mr Fletcher said.

Acting Queensland Minister for Main Roads, Road Safety and Ports Steven Miles said the new bridge was an integral part of the new Nudgee Road interchange.

“The interchange upgrade will ultimately deliver extended on and off-ramps to support traffic growth, as well as a cycling and pedestrian path over the motorway connecting to local networks,” Mr Miles said.

Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth said the Nudgee Road Bridge would ease congestion on the motorway and the surrounding road network.

“Part of the Gateway Upgrade North project, the Nudgee Road interchange had been reconfigured to include the new bridge and a relocated and extended northbound on-ramp,” Mr Howarth said.

Member for Nudgee Leanne Linard said it had been a mammoth task to complete the bridge, and congratulated road crews.

“This is a significant part of the overall Gateway Upgrade North project, and is one of 13 bridge structures being upgraded,” she said.

Member for Sandgate Stirling Hinchliffe said while the bridge was now open, the full task was not yet over.

“Opening of the new bridge will now allow the deconstruction of the old existing bridge during the next few months - this is such an important milestone for the local community and motorists, and I’m proud of the fact we’re getting on with the job and making the Gateway Upgrade North project a reality,” he said.

The Australian Government has committed over $914 million and the Queensland Government over $228 million to fund the $1.142 billion Gateway Upgrade North project.

The Gateway Upgrade North project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018, weather permitting. For further project information visit www.gatewayupgradenorth.com.au.
