Bundaberg principal honoured for 42 years’ service to education

Education Minister Kate Jones today congratulated Bundaberg East State School Principal Doug Ambrose on 42 years of dedicated service to Queensland education.

Ms Jones made a surprise visit to Bundy East State School today to join staff, students and members of the school community to congratulate Mr Ambrose.

Mr Ambrose first started his career in education as a teacher at Miles State School in 1976 before being made principal 12 months later at Arcadia Valley State School, a one-teacher school north of Injune.

He has been principal of Bundaberg East State School for close to 25 years.

“Mr Ambrose has helped create a wonderful school community here in Bundaberg,” Ms Jones said.

“His inspired leadership was never more evident than during and after the floods of January 2013, when the school was inundated.

“It was a wonderful example of the school and community coming together, something Mr Ambrose has strived for his entire career.

“Mr Ambrose will take long service leave from Friday before retirement.”

Deputy Principal Mick Brennan said Mr Ambrose’s commitment to students extended to taking maths extension classes and coaching interschool sporting teams, as well as mentoring other principals and teachers starting out in their careers.

Mr Ambrose was awarded an OAM for services to primary education in the Australia Day Honours List last year.

“I know the entire school community joins me in congratulating him in 42 years’ service to Queensland state schools and for his commitment to providing our students with the highest standard of education,” Minister Jones said.
