New face for Legal Aid Board

Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Dr Anthony Lynham has announced that barrister Joshua Creamer has been appointed to the Legal Aid Board of Queensland.

Dr Lynham said it was fitting that Mr Creamer’s appointment came in NAIDOC Week.

“Joshua Creamer has extensive expertise in the areas of native title and family law and a longstanding commitment to social justice issues,” Dr Lynham said.

“He is also a proud Waanyi and Kalkadoon man, with a national reputation for legal matters involving Indigenous Australians.

“Legal Aid is a core institution of our criminal justice system, helping the most vulnerable and ensuring every citizen’s right to a fair trial,” Dr Lynham said.

“I thank Mr Creamer for being willing to take on this new challenge, to ensure we meet the needs of the community.”

Mr Creamer said he was looking forward to taking up the role.

“I’ve always taken an active interest in social welfare issues and in communities with a high level of need,” Mr Creamer said.

“So this is an opportunity to work with people who are like-minded and want to build on the great work that’s gone before.

“Legal Aid plays a really important role in the community. There’s a huge level of need and Legal Aid ensures people are represented and have access to legal advice.”

Mr Creamer said it was a particularly pleasing announcement in NAIDOC week.

“There are only about 12 Indigenous barristers among the 6000 barristers across the country. By virtue of those numbers alone I’ve become a role model in my community, and I’m proud to be so.”

Earlier this year Retired Justice Margaret McMurdo was appointed as Chair of the Legal Aid Board.

Mr Creamer takes up his appointment today.
