Palaszczuk Government's Advance Queensland initiative continues to drive economic growth

The Palaszczuk Government’s flagship $420 million Advance Queensland initiative is continuing to drive economic growth, create jobs and improve the lives of Queenslanders by backing cutting edge innovation projects.

Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy Leeanne Enoch said today (Tuesday) the latest data to 30 June 2017 shows Advance Queensland is on target and gaining traction.

“We’ve so far invested more than $205 million and backed 1650 innovators – and their projects will drive 4821 jobs,” Ms Enoch said.

“These innovation projects are across the state, from the Norman River to Noosa and Townsville to Toowoomba.

“We’re supporting great ideas in manufacturing, mining and agriculture, and we’re encouraging new industries like biofuels and drones,” she said.

“More jobs will flow, both directly and indirectly, from our investment and the increasing focus on turning ideas into action across the state.

“We’re backing the entrepreneurs, the researchers and innovators – their ideas, their energy and their commitment will drive jobs into the future.”

Ms Enoch said Advance Queensland is establishing a solid foundation for the Palaszczuk Government’s long-term vision of diversifying our economy and investing in our innovators as they build more jobs of the future.

“There’s still more work to be done, but it demonstrates we are on the right track and that Advance Queensland is a strategic, long-term investment in Queensland’s economic future,” she said.

“These projects not only have economic benefits – they are making life better for Queenslanders.”

Ms Enoch said Advance Queensland funding backs vital cancer research and product development which will improve the lives of Queenslanders and others around the world.

“For the 195,000 Queenslanders who live with a cancer diagnosis, research backed by the Palaszczuk Government is giving them hope,” Ms Enoch said.

“For the one in three men and one in five women who will suffer heart disease, innovation can help them survive and recover, and for the one in 70 Australians affected by coeliac disease, we are backing new approaches that can help improve their daily lives.”

Ms Enoch said the global economy was on the cusp of great change, with huge advances in science and technology including the rise of artificial intelligence, the internet of things, as well as major advances in medical science and biotechnology.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s whole-of-government Advance Queensland initiative is positioning Queensland to take advantage of these opportunities - building on our strengths, as well as creating new opportunities for today and for tomorrow,” she said.
