The Palaszczuk Government is encouraging people to think about their gambling habits as part of Responsible Gambling Awareness Week, which starts today (Monday).

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said the theme for this year was ‘Is your gambling getting out of hand? Think of your family’.

“Responsible Gambling Awareness Week encourages gamblers to stay within their limits and highlights the support available to people who feel gambling may have become a problem,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“As part of the week (July 24-30), gambling providers and Queensland Gambling Help have joined together to reduce the negative impact gambling may have on Queenslanders now and into the future.”

Mrs D’Ath said most people gamble at some point or another, but for some it can become a problem and have serious impacts.

“This is why Responsible Gambling Awareness Week is so important and why the Government contributes more than $5.8 million each year to provide problem gambling treatment and support services.”

Today’s launch was organised by not-for-profit organisation Relationships Australia.

Relationships Australia CEO Dr Ian Law said it was great to see support from across industry, community and government for Responsible Gambling Awareness Week.

“It’s important to raise awareness of responsible gambling not only this week, but throughout the year. When family and friends are aware of issues that may arise related to problem gambling, they can play an important role in supporting their loved one to seek help,” Dr Law said.

“I encourage anyone concerned about their gambling to seek support by calling the Gambling Helpline on 1800 858 858 for free and confidential 24-hour counselling and crisis support.”

Help can be also accessed through face-to-face counselling services, online services and counselling and a residential service.
