The Cannonvale State School community today celebrated the opening of a new $5 million Junior Learning Precinct.

Police Minister Mark Ryan today officially opened the two-storey complex, which has been credited with acting as a windbreak during Cyclone Debbie and protecting the rest of the school from greater damage.

“It is wonderful that the school community decided to go ahead with today’s official opening and annual fete to celebrate its resilience and survival,” Mr Ryan said.

“During the cyclone rooms were flooded, falling trees collapsed classroom roofs, fences were torn down, windows were blown out and smashed by flying debris and half the school had to be recarpeted due to water damage.

“Despite this heart breaking damage the school community rallied and was ready for classes on day one of Term 2.”

Education Minister Kate Jones said the opening of the new centre marked a new look for the fast growing school.

“The centre is a part of stage one of the school’s new Master Plan,” Ms Jones said.

“The new building includes nine classrooms and was designed in consultation with the school and the Parents and Citizens’ Association to ensure the best educational outcomes and value for money.”

Principal Ms Angie Kelly said the new centre had opened from day one of the 2017 school year with more than 200 Prep and Year 1 students in nine new classrooms.

“The beautiful building brings the whole school together for the first time and is a great asset,” Ms Kelly said.

“The design incorporates features such as ample natural light and ventilation and a spacious layout.”

Cannonvale State School relocated to its current Coral Esplanade site from Cannon Valley in 1969. Celebrating 107 years in 2017, Cannonvale State School caters for students from the Whitsunday Islands, Shute Harbour, Airlie Beach, Riordanvale and other local farming communities.
