$520 million for infrastructure and roads in Mackay-Whitsunday region

The Mackay and Whitsundays region will see construction booming over the next year with $520 million delivered through the Palaszczuk Government’s 2017-18 Budget.

Acting Premier and Minister for Infrastructure Jackie Trad said that the funding would support 1,400 jobs over the next year.

“The Palaszczuk Government is serious about investing in the infrastructure each region needs,” Ms Trad said.

Treasurer Curtis Pitt, who is in Mackay today, said that the government is working closely with councils across the state to build projects that will make a real difference to communities and deliver local jobs.

“We will deliver major infrastructure projects such as the Whitsunday Airport upgrade and vital hospital and fire station redevelopments.”

Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert said the funding would deliver vital road projects.

“Road safety is a priority for our government. That’s why we are investing in road projects and upgrades throughout our region,” Ms Gilbert said.

“We are getting on with the job of building the Vine Creek bridges and the Mackay Ring Road.

“These projects will allow motorists to spend less time in the car and more time at home with family and friends.”

Member for Mirani Jim Pearce said the projects are part of the Palaszczuk Government’s $42 billion infrastructure spend over the next four years.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to continuing to invest in vital infrastructure funding, building our roads network, boosting productivity, creating jobs and fostering economic growth,” Mr Pearce said.

“We’re repairing the damage done by the LNP who slashed roads funding by $600 million and stalled countless projects across Queensland.”

Projects partly or fully funded in this Budget include:

    • $497.8 million Mackay Ring Road
    • $57.5 million Bruce Highway Sandy Gully Bridge replacement
    • $40 million Whitsunday Airport upgrade
    • $29.8 million Collinsville to Proserpine transmission line refit
    • $28 million Vine Creek bridges
