Budget delivers more for national parks

The State Budget has delivered an extra $40 million over two years to revitalise national parks in Queensland, improve park management, and enhance nature-based recreational opportunities.

Capital works

Minister for National Parks Steven Miles said $35 million of the extra $40 million would go towards job-creating capital works and infrastructure.

“Over the next two years, we will enhance critical infrastructure including nature-based tourism opportunities and the management of the State's national parks,” Mr Miles said.

“This is an important investment to protect natural and cultural values, and maintain the range and quality of visitor experiences.”

Investing to generate jobs

Mr Miles said additional funding to revamp Daisy Hill Koala Centre would help generate jobs

“We are improving facilities at the Daisy Hill Koala Bushland precinct in preparation for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games thanks to $3.3 million in state funding from 2016-17.”

“The government is also getting on with the $10 million redevelopment of the Mon Repos Turtle Centre with construction due to commence later this year.”

“These projects support local tourism and jobs.”

Great Barrier Reef

Minister Miles said new funding of $1.3 million over three years from 2018-19 would support the operation of an additional vessel for the Great Barrier Reef Joint Field Management Program.

“Following the success of the Reef Ranger, an additional long range high speed patrol vessel will help protect the reef against illegal activities and tackle crown-of-thorns starfish,” he said.

“Supporting the operation of another vessel means we can increase the presence of rangers out on the water.

“It will help further strengthen the day-to-day management of the Great Barrier Reef with increased compliance capabilities, protect and maintain marine and island ecosystems and support the servicing of essential tourism infrastructure across the reef.
 
“We are also delivering on our commitment to expand the public mooring and reef protection program in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, with $965,000 allocated.

“These investments continue this government’s commitment to the protection of the reef.”
