Premier and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk

The Palaszczuk Government supports the establishment of a Queensland memorial to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander servicemen and women.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the proposal by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dedicated Memorial Committee Queensland would recognise their service and sacrifice.

Indigenous Australians have served in conflicts since the Boer War in 1899.

The Government is contributing $25,000 to the memorial's development.

The Premier's announcement coincides with the 50th anniversary of the overwhelming referendum vote amending the Constitution to allow the Commonwealth to make laws for indigenous Australians and counting indigenous Australians in the national census.

"As we mark this historic vote, we rededicate ourselves to reconciliation and Closing the Gap on disadvantage between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians," the Premier said.
