The Palaszczuk Government is calling for Central Queensland businesses to replace and repair fencing in the Connors River region between Mackay and Rockhampton.

Member for Mirani Jim Pearce said contractors were needed to repair or replace 70km of fencing owned by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM), which was damaged in Cyclone Debbie and subsequent floods.

"This 70km stretch of fencing is needed to secure the livestock of local producers on lands which are adjacent to DNRM sites,” Mr Pearce said.

"In some sections the fence will need to be repaired, in other spots it will need to be re-built completely.

“To protect local producers from stock loss, and ensure the safety of local people, we need to get this fencing back up and secure as soon as possible.

"I'd strongly encourage local businesses who have the capacity to complete the work to put their hand up to tender for the project.”

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said that the Palaszczuk Government was determined to make sure locals were involved in the work.

"It's important that jobs go to local businesses where possible, so we can keep money in the local economy,” Mr de Brenni said.

"But it's also about capitalising on local knowledge - people in Central Queensland know the land, they know the conditions, and they know what's needed to get the job done."
