Queensland’s heritage buildings will receive a boost thanks to a second round of funding from the Palaszczuk Government’s $12 million Community Sustainability Action Grants program.

Speaking at the historic St Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Spring Hill, which received a grant in the first round of funding for stonemasonry works, Heritage Minister Steven Miles said he expected demand for the next funding round would be high.

“The second round of heritage grants is now open for applications until 20 June,” Mr Miles said.

“We received a tremendous response to the first round of these grants last year. More than $701,000was provided to 18 successful applicants.

“Among the recipients was the Presbyterian Church of Queensland, which received $50,000 to contribute to the $1.1 million spent to date on the restoration of this magnificent church.

“The restoration of St Paul’s, including the refurbishment of the 128 year-old bell tower, ensures that the building can be enjoyed by members of the church and the Queensland public, for generations to come.”

Situated at 43 St Pauls Terrace, St Paul’s Church was built between 1887 and 1889, and was entered into the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992.

Mr Miles said the next Heritage round would provide a total of $1 million in funding to eligible applicants, with individual grants of up to $50,000.

“Projects can include improvements and repairs, from restumping to reroofing to the development or review of conservation management plans for the heritage site,” Mr Miles said.

“Eligible applicants include owners of heritage-listed places. It also includes the organisations that occupy them which have responsibility for their maintenance.

“Cultural heritage tourism is a growing industry and combines the advantages of building community spirit and boosting local economies.”

“I hope to see more communities benefitting from conserving and promoting their local heritage-listed sites in this round.”

Local governments identified under category 1 of the Local Government Remuneration and Discipline Tribunal Report 2016 are also eligible to apply for funding.
