Large crowds are expected for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, with more than one million ticket requests lodged for competition events.

Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones said all sports had received strong interest during the ticket request phase, which closed at midnight last night.

“Sports such as Netball, Swimming, Rugby 7s, Track Cycling, Athletics and Diving – as well as the Opening Ceremony – are among the most popular events so far,” Ms Jones said.

“This is great news and strong momentum for what we know will be the best Games ever.

“People can expect to be notified of their ticket allocations in June.

“Computer-generated ticket allocations to oversubscribed events will now take place before remaining tickets go on sale in July.”

Ms Jones said this strong and early enthusiasm for tickets demonstrated the Games was set to be a great success.

“With ten months still to go, this early excitement sends a message to the world the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will be the best ever,” she said.

“I urge all Queenslanders who didn’t request tickets in this first phase to get on board when ticket sales open in July.

“We don’t want anyone to miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see many of the world’s greatest athletes competing live on the Gold Coast and in event cities – Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville.

“It’s also a great opportunity for Queenslanders to get behind our local sporting heroes.”
