Global trade critical to Queensland economy and local communities: Premier

CAIRNS: Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has reaffirmed her Government’s commitment to push Queensland exports even stronger after posting record results for the last 12 months.

Addressing almost 80 Canberra-based ambassadors and diplomats at the Heads of Mission meeting in Cairns, the Premier said Queensland’s exports had posted a record calendar year of $52 billion in 2016, but was already signs of breaking that record this year.

“In the 12 months to March this year, Queensland exports increased to $59 billion – the equivalent of a 23% increase over that 12-month period,” she said.

“Queensland’s economy has consistently outperformed other advanced economies since the early 1990s and is on track to continue leading the nation this year despite the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Debbie.”

“There is no better place to invest than Queensland and no better time than now. This strategy is a key component of our economic plan for Queensland and will focus on maturing the pipeline of Queensland’s exports and investments."

Queensland Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment Curtis Pitt has recently released the new $35 million Advancing Trade and Investment – Queensland Trade and Investment Strategy 2017-2022 would build on the state's strong traditional industries and new and developing sectors to boost exports and generate new jobs.

Addressing the Heads of Mission with Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop and Mr Pitt last night, the Premier said the three-day regional visit was an opportunity to showcase the diversity of Far North Queensland’s economy.

“This Heads of Mission event will showcase the region’s businesses and our local expertise in tropical health, energy and food production,” she said.

“This visit is also an opportunity to share what Queensland has to offer abroad, including our World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, stunning beaches and beautiful rainforest hinterland.”

“Like other jurisdictions around the world, Queensland’s economy is changing with our traditional products being supplemented by new goods and services such as bio-technology,” she said.

“That’s why my Government is supporting innovation-led growth through our $405 million Advance Queensland investment, to inspire more innovation, build business, attract investment and generate jobs.”
