Mackay health board to benefit from continuity

In a show of confidence in the Mackay Hospital and Health Board, six members have been reappointed for further terms by the State Government.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Cameron Dick said three other members would continue to serve on the board.

“Board Chairman, former MP Tim Mulherin, will continue to provide strong leadership in the delivery of health services in Mackay for a further four years,” Mr Dick said.

“Former Deputy Mayor of Mackay Regional Council Darryl Camilleri and pharmacist David Aprile have also been reappointed for a further three years.

“Registered nurse, midwife and paramedic Leeanne Heaton, solicitor Suzanne Brown and communications specialist Karla Steen have also been reappointed for four years.

“The Mackay Hospital and Health Board is a diverse group, with four women and five men – all with a range of backgrounds, experience and skills – combining to ensure the broader community is well represented in the health space.

“I look forward to working all board members towards achieving the goal of making Queensland’s health system the best in Australia.”

Mr Dick said about 30 people nominated Mackay as their preferred board during a public expression of interest process and the task of selecting candidates was a tough one.

The 16 boards throughout Queensland are responsible under the Hospital and Health Board Act 2011 for local performance of their health services and the delivery of public health services within their communities.

The board appointments will take effect on 18 May 2017.

Mackay Hospital and Health Board

Mr Timothy Mulherin (Chair) was born and raised in Mackay, where he lives with wife Erin and his three teenaged children, Mr Mulherin was the MP for Mackay 1995-2015. Prior to entering politics, Mr Mulherin worked in the electricity supply industry in Mackay. – reappointed until 17/05/2021

Dr Darryl Camilleri (Deputy Chair) is a chartered accountant and former Deputy Mayor of the Mackay Regional Council, Mr Camilleri has served as Chairman for a number of community organisations including Mackay Whitsunday Regional Economic Development Corporation, Mackay Chamber of Commerce, and Mackay and District Health Council – reappointed until 17/05/2020.

Dr Judith (Helen) Archibald is a general practitioner at Plaza Medical Mackay and an associate senior lecturer at James Cook University’s School of Medicine. Chair of the Medical Services Committee for the Mater Hospital Mackay and a member of its Medical Advisory Committee. Clinical director for BreastScreen Queensland Mackay Service – currently appointed until 17/05/2018

Professor Richard Murray Professor Richard Murray is Dean of the College of Medicine and Dentistry at James Cook University. President of Medical Deans Australia and New Zealand and a past President of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine – currently appointed until 17/05/2019.

Dr David Aprile is well known in Mackay as the Founding Partner of Mackay Day and Night Pharmacy Group. Has served on many local community and government based boards in Mackay and the surrounding area. – reappointed until 17/05/2020

Mr John Nugent extensive background in hospital and health care management with over 35 years’ experience, and has been closely involved in local community organisations, having lived in Mackay since 1988 – currently appointed until 17/05/2019.

Ms Leeanne Heaton has a diverse range of experience working in healthcare as a registered nurse, registered midwife and paramedic. Ms Heaton also has experience working in rural and remote parts of Australia as a flight nurse with the Royal Flying Doctor Service – reappointed until 17/05/2021.

Ms Suzanne Brown is principal and leading Commercial Solicitor at McKays Solicitors. Ms Brown is Mackay’s only Queensland Law Society Business Law Accredited Specialist and one of only 23 in Queensland. From 2012-2015, she was a director of North Queensland Bulk Ports – reappointed until 17/05/2021.

Ms Karla Steen is a communications and media strategist with more than 17 years’ experience in radio and television journalism, corporate communications, and marketing. Her former roles include Senior Media Advisor to various Queensland Government Ministers including Child Safety, Communities, Disabilities Services and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships – reappointed until 17/05/2021.
