Premier welcomes corporate Australia support for cyclone, flood communities

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has congratulated Coles and BHP for each contributing $250,000 to charities nominated by the Queensland Government for donations in response to ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie and severe flooding.

“Last week, I announced the Government would make a $1 million donation to assist four charities to deliver urgent services and support communities devastated by Debbie and the flooding that followed,” the Premier said.

“I urge other companies to also contribute to these charities and support the work they are doing on the ground.”

“Rather than establish a separate appeal, our experience from TC Marcia was that the quickest way to get funding to the people hit hardest and in greatest need was to encourage donations directly to the charities.”

BHP Billiton has committed $250,000 to The Salvation Army to help deliver urgently needed services and support to regional Queensland communities such as Mackay and Moranbah.

Coles has announced a national appeal for affected households and primary producers in Queensland and New South Wales. Coles will donate $100,000 to Red Cross for affected communities, and provide $150,000 in grants to affected farmers.

Coles has announced, as of today, customers can make donations at more than 700 Coles supermarkets across Australia. The donations will be directed to Red Cross to support disaster relief and recovery work in northern NSW and Queensland.

Ms Palaszczuk encouraged anyone wanting to help their fellow Queenslanders to make a donation directly with a respected charity:

    • Australian Red Cross Society —1800 811 700 redcross.org.au
    • The Salvation Army — 13 SALVOS (13 72 58) salvos.org.au/
    • St Vincent de Paul Society of Queensland — 3010 1002 vinnies.org.au/donate
    • UnitingCare Community — 1800 001 953 uccommunity.org.au/disaster-relief

The Premier said these four major charities had already mobilised to assist with the recovery and had staff and volunteers trained to respond.

“These charities are trained to respond to the needs of communities hit by natural disasters and can provide food, equipment, shelter, and other support,” she said.

Goods and services can also be donated to GIVIT through their website www.givit.org.au
