Premier joins students to commemorate ANZAC legacy

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk today joined more than 1500 Queensland students to commemorate the ANZAC legacy.

Attending the annual Students’ ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony in ANZAC Square, Brisbane, the Premier said she was proud to see so many young people embracing the ANZAC spirit.

“The students at today’s ceremony have represented their schools with pride, honouring ANZAC traditions and paying their solemn respects to those who have served our country,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“Although over 100 years have passed since our soldiers braved Gallipoli, the students here today have demonstrated that the ANZAC spirit lives on in our younger generations.”

Ms Palaszczuk said the Students’ ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony provided students with an opportunity to uphold time-honoured ANZAC commemoration traditions, from laying wreaths to observing one minute’s silence.

“This ceremony brings together over 1500 students and teachers from almost 100 Queensland schools, from as far north as Gympie and as far south as the Gold Coast,” she said.

“I wish to congratulate the ANZAC Day Commemoration Committee (ADCC) on their ongoing commitment.”

The Queensland Government has committed $180,000 in sponsorship to the ADCC between 2016 and 2018, to support the staging of the Students’ ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony and ANZAC Dawn Services.

As part of the 2014-2018 Anzac Centenary period, Queenslanders of all ages have been provided with opportunities to learn and reflect on over a hundred years of service.
