Premier welcomes Rio Tinto donation ex-TC Debbie relief efforts

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has welcomed Rio Tinto’s donation of $250,000 to Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery to support communities devastated by flooding and the impact of ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie.

“I welcome this commitment from Rio Tinto Australia and its recognition of the support for families and communities severely affected by Debbie and associated flooding,” the Premier said.

Rio Tinto has bauxite, coal, alumina and aluminium operations in regional Queensland including Mackay and Gladstone. The company’s Growth & Innovation business is headquartered in Brisbane.

The Premier said the activation of joint Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements provided support for households.

More than 38,000 grants have been paid out to Queenslanders in need following TC Debbie, totalling almost $16.5 million. Immediate Hardship Payments of $180 per person, or up to $900 for a family of five or more, help cover the cost of essential items such as food, clothing, medicine and accommodation.

The Premier encouraged anyone wanting to help their fellow Queenslanders to make a donation directly with a respected charity:

“These charities are trained to respond to the needs of communities hit by natural disasters and can provide food, equipment, shelter, and other support,” she said.

Goods and services can also be donated to GIVIT through their website www.givit.org.au
