Premier leads bi-partisan business boost ahead of Games

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will lead a key team of senior officials to London this week in a bi-partisan bid to boost trade and investment opportunities for Queensland ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Premier said the inaugural meeting of the Commonwealth Trade Ministers on Friday 10 March in London would mark the start of a surge of new business opportunities for Queensland.

“We are going for gold for Queensland as part of this very important London visit that comes at a pivotal time for the Commonwealth and its new trade agenda,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“We are committed to driving economic opportunities for the state and our significant investment in the Commonwealth Games is an investment in the future.

“I am grateful for the strong bipartisan approach to the Games and securing benefits for Queenslanders and I welcome Shadow Minister for the Commonwealth Games John Paul Langbroek who will also be in London.

“He will be part of a delegation including GOLDOC chair Peter Beattie AC, Embracing 2018 Advisory Committee chair Rob Borbidge, His Excellency the Governor of Queensland Paul De Jersey AC and City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.

“The Commonwealth’s 2 billion people make up 30 per cent of the world’s population and constitutes about a fifth of the Gross Domestic Product so the opportunities for trade and business are significant.

“At the meeting of the Commonwealth Trade Ministers I will highlight our plan to mine the potential of the GC2018 to build a lasting legacy of new trade and investment and business opportunities for Queensland.”

Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones said the international countdown to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) will kick off with the departure of the Queen’s Baton from Buckingham Palace on Monday 13 March.

“This historic occasion signals the beginning of Queensland’s international trade and investment activities in the lead-up to the Games,” Ms Jones said.

“A team of 15 officers are travelling to London to support the delegation, Queen’s Baton Relay Launch and this extensive trade and investment program.

“Over the next year, the Queen’s Baton Relay will pass through every Commonwealth nation and territory on its 230,000-kilometre journey to the Gold Coast in April 2018.

“This will provide the backbone to our international activities with a roadshow of business receptions and briefings in key markets, designed to target priority international buyers and investors.”

Mayor Tom Tate said City of Gold Coast was working with the Palaszczuk Government to put Queensland on the world map.

"This partnership approach will show the world we are ready for 2018 and we have so much to offer so far as investment, sport, education, tourism and culture,” the Mayor said.

"Council’s international investment team will ensure the business-to-business exchange and networking is first class throughout our UK visit."

The Premier will also talk about trade and investment at government, business and community leaders at a special Queensland reception in London and there will also be an investor roundtable discussion to attract key tenants for the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will run from 4 to 15 April 2018.
