New Queensland Library Board appointments announced

Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy Leeanne Enoch today announced new appointments to the Library Board of Queensland.

“The State Library of Queensland is a vital community resource making a real difference in the lives of all Queenslanders,” Ms Enoch said.

The board’s functions are to promote the advancement and effective operation and coordination of public libraries throughout the state; and to control, maintain and manage the State Library of Queensland.

The Board members, who have been appointed from 1 March 2017 for a term of three years, are ; Professor Andrew Griffiths; Ms Linda Apelt; Dr Sandra Phillips; Emeritus Professor Tom Cochrane OAM; Professor Marek Kowalkiewicz; Dr Anita Heiss; Mr Bob Shead; Mr Malcolm McMillan; and Councillor Julia Leu as members.

Professor Andrew Griffiths, Acting Executive Dean at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Queensland is the board’s new Chair.

These appointees are all leaders in their respective fields, with proven expertise in arts and education; technology, including digital literacy and preservation; corporate management; innovation; digital economy; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and learning; information curation and management; regional engagement; and public administration.

“I am confident that the board’s mix of skills and experience will provide invaluable leadership, direction and advice to the State Library of Queensland,” Ms Enoch said.

Professor Griffiths said he was honoured to be appointed as the chair of the new board.

He said he welcomed the opportunity to work collaboratively with State Librarian and Chief Executive Officer Vicki McDonald and her team.

“The State Library is a cherished Queensland institution. We as the new board have a really important role to play in the digital economy by ensuring all Queenslanders have access to the resources and services they need that increase literacy and support entrepreneurialism,” Professor Griffiths said.

Ms Enoch thanked the outgoing board members for their service.
