Queenslanders are encouraged to join the rest of Australia in switching off their lights to support Earth Hour on tonight (25 March).

Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection Steven Miles said his department was a strong advocate of the global climate change initiative which is marking its 10th anniversary this weekend.

“Where possible, the light switch will be flicked off on all non-essential lighting in government-owned and leased buildings across the state on Saturday night,” Mr Miles said.

“Throughout Queensland, around 30,000 public servants across about 450,000 square metres of office space will participate to help raise awareness about climate change.

“In the Brisbane Central Business District alone, 15 government-occupied buildings including the recently completed 1 William Street will have lights switched out.

“I urge all Queensland residents and business communities to join the drive and turn off lights from 8:30pm to 9:30pm.

“This is a great opportunity for us all to help make a difference as we to continue to advocate for a low-pollution, clean energy future for our world.

“From businesses turning off their lights when office space is empty to households unplugging appliances when not in use, there are number of ways that we can all get involved.

“In 2014, more than seven million lights in Australia alone were switched off for Earth Hour and in 2015, the initiative became the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment.”

Mr Miles said Earth Hour was recognition of the need to take action on climate change to ensure a sustainable environment for generations to come.
