Premier and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk today attended the official opening of the Queensland Rugby League’s Maroon Festival, announcing the Queensland Government as a major sponsor of the event.

The Premier said the inaugural festival, running from 28–31 May 2017 at South Bank Parklands, will enhance the experience of the State of Origin for all fans of the game.

“We want Queenslanders to come out and enjoy one of the State’s largest sporting events in a family friendly environment,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“When we were asked to support this event-we couldn’t wait to be part of it.

“The Maroon Festival gives families the chance to watch the game live on the big screen, join in a wide range of activities and learn more about rugby league.

“This free four-day event will bring people from all walks of life, and all age groups together to support our Mighty Maroons team during this year’s State of Origin.”

The Premier said the Festival is a great opportunity to build community spirit and bring people together.

“It is a chance to celebrate everything it means to be a proud Queenslander and reflect on all the wonderful qualities of our State, our inclusiveness and diversity.

“With Queensland Day held annually on 6 June, we have worked closely with Queensland Rugby League to ensure the Maroon Festival reinforces State pride and our generous spirit that comes from watching the Mighty Maroons in action.

QRL Chairman Bruce Hatcher said the 2017 Maroon Festival is shaping up to be one of the biggest events on the Queensland calendar.

“An event of this magnitude wouldn’t be possible without an enormous amount of support from the game’s partners and we’re extremely fortunate that The Star Entertainment Group, the Queensland Government and the National Rugby League share our vision” Mr Hatcher said.
