Building boost for Bamaga

Bamaga is benefiting from a pipeline of construction and maintenance works in the township, with several projects recently completed or set to commence in the near future.

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said the recent works on police accommodation and social housing projects combined with upcoming maintenance projects will support up to 40 jobs in the remote township.

“The $1.4 million police accommodation project was completed by Ausco Modular Pty Ltd and supported approximately 24 jobs,” Mr de Brenni said.

“This project delivers on the Government’s objective to assist regional and remote communities by increasing workforce participation, stimulating economic growth and delivering new infrastructure.

“The two two-bedroom modular homes were partly built in Townsville and trucked to Cairns, before being barged to the remote township.”

Minister for Police Mark Ryan said the new accommodation for police at Bamaga was essential for ensuring officers located in the regional community had appropriate living facilities.

“We have a total of 10 police located at Bamaga and they all do a fantastic job in keeping the community safe,” Minister Ryan said.

“The Palaszczuk Government made a commitment to provide our police right across Queensland with the resources and infrastructure they need to continue their great work and this is just one example of us delivering on that commitment.”

Work has also finished on a new public housing dwelling in Bamaga that will provide additional support for local residents needing housing solutions.

Ministerial Champion for the Northern Peninsula Glenn Butcher said the $374,000 project was completed by the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council and supported as many as eight jobs.

“I know that projects like these can have a huge impact in small communities,” Mr Butcher said.

“This project gave work and income to electricians, plumbers and carpenters, while improving essential services for the remote far north Queensland township.”

The jobs boost is set to continue, with a local construction company having secured a new Queensland Government contract to undertake various maintenance works to 13 government employee residences.

Mr Butcher said the Bamaga-based company, Positive Concrete and Construction Pty Ltd, was awarded the contract in recent days.

“Positive Concrete and Construction Pty Ltd will undertake various maintenance works, and we expect this contract will support up to nine workers.”
