The Honourable Dr Anthony Lynham

Locals are being encouraged to find out more about proposals to protect The Spit’s parkland and develop an integrated resort development.

Four public information sessions are being held at Southport over the next 10 days as part of the three-month independent community consultation on the two proposals.

State Development Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the consultation team had already received more than more than 2200 responses to the survey.

“These are two significant proposals for the Gold Coast and it’s important that people with a view have their say,” he said.

The consultations are about a proposed rejuvenation of The Spit parklands, as well as ASF Consortium’s integrated resort development proposal.

“The Palaszczuk Government met its election commitment to protect Wave Break Island, and now it is time to consider the long-term future of the existing 140 hectares of public areas,” Dr Lynham said.

“The Spit is a special place for visitors and local families but it needs to be rejuvenated and protected.

“Now is the time to speak up about illegal campers and persistent littering. This area deserves better and we are committed to cleaning it up and preserving it.”

Independent public consultation is also underway on ASF’s proposal, separately to ASF’s own consultation.

The public information sessions are on:

  • Sunday, 19 March 10.30am-1:30pm, at the Broadwater Parklands
  • Tuesday 21, Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 March, 8.30-10.30am, at the Department of State Development, 7 Short Street Southport.
