Queenslanders' Royal visit memories bound for Her Majesty

Recollections from Queenslanders of the Queen Elizabeth II's first visit to the State - 63 years ago this week - will be shared with Her Majesty.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will join the Queen at Buckingham Palace on Monday (March 13) for the launch of the Queen’s Baton Relay for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Ahead of the visit, the Premier asked Queenslanders to share their memories of her historic 1954 visit to Queensland, which included touring Brisbane, Toowoomba, Bundaberg, Townsville, Cairns, Mackay and Rockhampton.

Queenslanders from across the State, including Brisbane, Ipswich, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Kingaroy, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Townsville, Innisfail and Cairns, contributed memories of the 1954 visit.

Brisbane bookbinder Winston Lyall has prepared the book to be fit for the Queen.

Mr Lyall, who operates Able Bookbinding at Everton Hills, was asked by the Premier's office to bind a book of contributed messages and items from the State Archives from Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Queensland in 1954.

“Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk had asked Queenslanders to share their memories of the 1954 visit so she could share them with the Queen,” he said.

“I chose a blue goat skin leather for the cover.  Blue is the Queen’s favourite colour with gold lettering.”

Mr Lyall has 30 years’ experience as a bookbinder, but this is the first time he has bound a book destined for the Royal family.  Mr Lyall was named “Winston” for Winston Churchill, who was the Queen’s first Prime Minister. Current Prime Minister Theresa May is the Queen’s 13th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
