Deadline extended for written submissions to Queensland Building Plan

The Palaszczuk Government has extended the deadline for formal written submissions on the Queensland Building Plan.

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said he welcomed the response to the Building Plan consultation, with more than 800 people having attended the face-to-face consultation sessions so far, and more than 450 people submitting online feedback.

“To have this many busy people, especially family run small businesses, take time out to share their ideas on how to improve this critical industry is really encouraging, but not surprising given the extent of the issues involved,” Mr de Brenni said.

“I’ve decided to extend the deadline for written submissions until March 15, to make sure that everyone’s voice is heard before we begin the process of fast tracking these reforms.

“This Government is committed to listening to the views of all Queenslanders, and this has been reflected through our extensive consultation so far.

“I’ve been meeting with businesses, industry groups and consumers around the state, talking in depth about the reforms proposed in the discussion paper.

“Sessions have been well attended in Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Maryborough, Maroochydore, Caboolture, the Gold Coast, Logan and Morningside so far this month, and there’ll be more to come in March.

“For people unable to make the face-to-face sessions, we’ve got all the proposals online, and there’s been great engagement across the website.

“More than 17,300 people have visited the website and nearly 6,000 have downloaded documents.

“Surveys on building certification, licensing reforms and security of payment have been the most frequently downloaded topics.

“We want to hear from everyone – whether you’re a homeowner, a trade licence holder, a sub-contractor or a contractor – the building and construction industry touches the lives of every Queenslander.

“The building and construction industry employs around 200,000 people and has an impact on thousands of suppliers and customers.

“If you haven’t already had your say, there’s still time to submit a survey online or to attend one of the upcoming face-to-face consultation sessions.

“For the Queensland Government to make effective policy and legislation to strengthen the industry, we need to hear from the people who will be affected by any proposed reforms.

“It’s important we get this reform right.”
