Four roundabouts on Kawana Way have been upgraded to improve traffic access to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH).

Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said roundabouts at Jamaica Way, Kawana Island Boulevard, Premier Circuit and Metier Linkway were upgraded to include two through lanes for Kawana Way.

“The works have been finished before hospital services are due to begin on 6 March, which is great news for the community,” Mr Bailey said.

“In addition to the roundabout upgrades, a section of Kawana Way between Metier Linkway and Capital Place has been rehabilitated to improve the road surface.”

Mr Bailey said upgrades to the roundabouts were identified as the highest priority project by an interagency taskforce formed to identify access improvements to the hospital.

“Additional benefits include dedicated off-road cycle lanes, improved lighting and traffic signals on two legs of the Kawana Island Boulevard roundabout,” he said.

“This will help manage traffic on Kawana Island Boulevard and improve the flow during heavy traffic. The technique is known as roundabout metering.

“The Palaszczuk Government is pleased to fund this priority project and is now looking ahead to additional priority works to improve access to the precinct.”

Capacity-improvement works on Kawana Way Link Road between Woodlands and Creekside boulevards area are on target for completion mid-year, weather permitting.

“Signalised intersections along Nicklin Way and Kawana Way have already been updated with technology that will give priority to emergency service vehicles for urgent cases.”
