A local building company has secured a new Queensland Government contract to provide the much-needed installation of a residential lift to a Thursday Island social housing dwelling.

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said that LMC Construction & Maintenance Pty Ltd was awarded the contract to install a new eco-friendly lift that uses recycled water at the property to improve access, amenity and mobility for current residents.

“LMC are based on Thursday Island, so this project will support jobs for locals and give a boost to the local economy.

“The project is part of a broader home modifications program of work for social housing properties across Queensland.”

Ministerial Champion for the Torres Strait Shannon Fentiman said the project was great news for the local community.

“It’s fantastic to see a local builder taking the lead on this project,” Ms Fentiman said.

“I know there is a real need on Thursday Island for accessible housing, so this project will have a big impact on the local community.”

Disability Services Minister and Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland Coralee O’Rourke said the project was a great example of what Government could achieve by listening and working with the community.

“Our Government is committed to helping people to age in place and remain connected to their community,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“By working with Thursday Islanders, through our Government’s Housing Strategy, we have been able to identify this important project that will deliver independence and security.”
