Parole system strengthened by GPS offender tracking

Corrective Services Minister Mark Ryan announced today that one week after the Palaszczuk Government announced the expansion of GPS tracking technology to increase community safety, the first parolee has had a GPS tracker placed on them as part of enhancing their supervision conditions.

“This parolee is the first of up to 500 to be managed under this system, with QCS currently procuring additional devices to support the rollout,” Minister Ryan said.

“To be clear: this parolee is not getting parole early.  My message is: if you do the crime, you will do the time.

“GPS tracking technology provides the independent parole board with an extra option when considering parole as well as our government agencies with an extra set of eyes to keep our community safe.”

Minister Ryan said the Queensland Parole System Review recommended Queensland Corrective Services develop GPS tracking capability to enhance the supervision of parolees.

“The Palaszczuk Government committed to acting swiftly to commence implementation of these recommendations and we have delivered on this commitment.

“Immediately in response, we committed $35.15 million to expand GPS monitoring to strengthen the management of parolees.”

Minister Ryan said the implementation of GPS will be steadily expanded after careful assessment of suitable parolees for the technology.

“While we have just commenced the use of this technology for parolees, it has proven to be a significant tool to enhance the management of dangerous sex offenders since 2011.

“QCS have also received funding to implement a geographic information system to enhance mapping capability.

“GPS is a proven technology to enhance supervision – we will continue to source the best technology to keep Queenslanders safe,” Minister Ryan said.
